Why you should replace your air filter this winter

December 13, 2016

We stress regular maintenance on your HVAC system constantly, but this doesn’t just mean ongoing tune-ups – it also means looking at your air filters. It’s an easy way to help keep your system working smoothly and increase your indoor air quality, and you can easily do it by yourself! Now is the ideal time to inspect your filter, as the cooler weather comes to a conclusion and heat is approaching. There are a lot of benefits to getting a replacement air filter, such as:

Lengthening the life and efficiency of your system
A surefire way to cause a system breakdown is a dirty air filter. Extra dirt that accumulates on your filter can influence your whole system to run harder than it should to keep the air in your home cool. Not only will it hinder the performance of your system, but it can increase your utility bills and result in your system overheating.

Enhancing indoor air quality
The purpose of an air filter is that it snatches contaminants through your air system before it reaches your home. As the filter gets older, the less capable it is in catching things like dust and mold that can impact the health and comfort of your house, particularly if someone in your family suffers from allergies or asthma. With increased temperatures coming up, pollen and mold are especially likely to be hanging around and you certainly don’t like the idea of it traveling in your indoor space. A quality, clean air filter will help your family breathe easy and remain healthy throughout allergy season.

Inspect your system or current air filter provider for suggestions on how frequently you should be putting in a replacement filter. For most filters through GV Heating & Air, we recommend an annual change with the highest MERV filter available. Not sure if it’s the right time to exchange your air filter?
