When it’s a hot summer day in Crystal and Twin Cities, nothing could be worse than registering your AC isn’t operating the way it is meant to. The last thing you should have to do is request AC help. But your air conditioner is a quite complex system, so it can be difficult to figure out what’s triggering the problem solo.

That’s why GV Heating & Air created this handbook to help you find out what might be taking place with your home comfort system. Here, you’ll see some common situtations that explain why your space is feeling uncomfortable. And while some of these are simple] DIY activities, you might need to call in a professional for AC repair.

And if you do, GV Heating & Air is prepared to take care of your home. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your house in Crystal and Twin Cities.

1. Your Thermostat Settings Could Be Off

Everyone adjusts their thermostat a bit differently to work with their specific needs. However, a lot of homeowners make the mistake of setting their thermostat to “On” as opposed to “Auto.” Under this setting, the fan in your AC will continue to blow even after you’ve attained your desired temperature.

This can feel like your AC is distributing warmish air, when actually it’s only using the fan on a more regular basis than needed. Change this setting and work out if things change.

2. Your Air Conditioner Needs a Good Cleaning

There are two central areas to look for dirt or dust accumulation when your home comfort system doesn’t feel like it is performing as it should.

Firstly, take a look at your HVAC filter. If you don’t swap out your filter on a regular basis, accumulated dirt can make it more difficult for air to move through and lower the temperature your house. If your filter is visibly dirty or dusty, it’s likely time for a change. (And in general, you should replace it about once every three months at a minimum.)

If your filter is looking fine, head to your outdoor unit. Make sure there’s enough room around the unit and clear away plants or debris close by. This piece of your cooling system discharges the heat from inside your home. If the coils outside are clogged, you won’t be feeling cool inside.

We recommend booking professional air conditioner maintenance each year to keep your system working like it should and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your AC is Losing Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the chemical that cools the air in your house. It moves between your indoor and outside units to grab and let off heat, to help your space keep comfortable. If there is an opening along that system, you won’t be comfortable again until you set professional air conditioning repair.

Indications of a refrigerant leak include a drop in cooled air, pricier electric bills, frozen evaporator coils and odd hissing noises coming from your air conditioner.

If you suspect refrigerant might be leaking, call GV Heating & Air for AC repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be hazardous to your family’s health.

4. One or More Elements Should Be Replaced

Your system contains a a handful of crucial pieces. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If one of these is not working as it should, your home comfort will suffer.

Our GV Heating & Air experts are trained and knowledged in HVAC. They can help you find and fix any issue.

5. Your Air Conditioner Has to Be Updated

If your system is more than 10 years old, it could likely be time to think about new air conditioner installation. As your system gets up there in years, it simply won’t work as well as it once did. And it could be making your home uncomfortable.

If your system is newer but still isn’t cooling things off, it could be the wrong size for your house. AC units are not all the same size. An air conditioner that’s not big enough just can’t chill a house the way a correctly sized air conditioner can.
