Five Reasons Why Your Air Conditioner Isn't Cooling Your Residence

July 10, 2020

When it’s a hot summer day in Crystal and Twin Cities, nothing could be worse than registering your HVAC isn’t operating the way it is supposed to. The last thing you should have to do is schedule HVAC help. But your HVAC is a quite involved system, so it can be almost impossible to find out what’s causing the trouble solo.

That’s why GV Heating & Air crafted this informational guide to help you find out what could be going on with your cooling system. From here, you’ll discover a few common situtations that explain why your home is feeling a little too warm. And even though a couple of these are straightforward DIY projects, you could still need to find a professional for AC repair.

And if you need us, GV Heating & Air is here for you. Here are five reasons why your air conditioner may not be cooling your house in Crystal and Twin Cities.

1. Your Device Settings Could Be Off

Every household uses their thermostat a little differently to fit their distinct requirements. Still, many homeowners make the error of setting their thermostat to “On” rather than “Auto.” Because of this setting, the fan in your AC will continue to produce an air current even once you’ve gotten to your desired temperature.

This can seem like your ducts are blowing out warmish air, when in fact it’s just utilizing the fan more frequently than required. Adjust this setting and work out if things are different.

2. Your HVAC Needs a Good Cleaning

There are two primary places to check for dirt or dust accrual when your home comfort system doesn’t seem to be functioning well.

Before anything else, check out your AC system’s filter. If you don’t switch out your filter regularly, built-up dust can make it hard for air to flow through and cool your home. If your filter is clearly dirty or dusty, it’s more than likely time for a substitute. (And as a rule, you should replace it about once every three months at the very least.)

If your filter is looking fine, head to your outside unit. Find out if there’s a couple of feet of room around your air conditioner and sweep away plants or dirt stuck there. This part of your system lets off the heat from your house. If the coils outside are blocked, you won’t be feeling comfortable in your home.

We recommend scheduling professional air conditioner maintenance annually to keep your system working like it should and to keep your warranty valid.

3. Your System is Losing Refrigerant

Refrigerant is the stuff that cools down the air in your home. It cycles between your inside and external units to absorb and discharge heat, to help your house keep comfortable. If there is a leak along that path, you won’t be feeling comfortable again until you set professional air conditioning repair.

Indications of a refrigerant leak include a decrease in treated air, higher energy expenses, frozen evaporator coils and unusual hissing noises arising from your HVAC.

If you think refrigerant may be leaking, call GV Heating & Air for AC repair as soon as possible. Refrigerant can also be damaging to your family’s health.

4. One or More Elements Should Be Replaced

Your cooling system contains a few key elements. These include the blower, evaporator coils, compressor, fan, condenser coils and expansion valve. If any part is not working, your home comfort will suffer.

Our GV Heating & Air technicians are well-trained and knowledged in HVAC. They can help you find and fix any trouble.

5. Your System Needs to Be Upgraded

If your air conditioner is more than 10 years old, it is probably a good time to research new air conditioner installation. As your system ages, it simply won’t function as well as it has in the past. And it might be making your house feel unpleasant.

If your HVAC unit is newer but still isn’t properly cooling your home, it could be undersized for your household. AC units are not all the same size. A cooling system that’s undersized absolutely can’t chill a home the way a properly sized AC can.
